The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has said 5.5 million people have registered ahead of 2019 tripatite elections and assured Malawians for free and fair elections. So far the Commission has done six phases
During 6th phase, atleast 866,985 Malawians have registered, latest figures from Malawi Electoral Commission shows. The commission had projected to register 1,064,376 Malawians.
Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Justice Jane Ansah said this in Lilongwe on Friday at a Press briefing to give an update regarding the progress for the 2019 Tripartite Elections voter registration exercise.
However, Nsanje is the only district so far of all the districts which have already undergone the 2019 Tripartite Elections registration exercise to have recorded voter registration turn out surpassing the 2018 projection for the district.
She said the total that MEC has so far for the district shows that Nsanje has gone above the projected figures that Commission had for the 2018 registration exercise.
The District has registered 145,528 voters translating into 104 per cent of the 2018 projection and 115 per cent against the 2014 total registered voters for the district.
In 2014 Nsanje and Chikhwawa registered 126,636 and 244,862 voters respectively. This year Chikhwawa has registered 258,968 voters.
Ansah said the figures released are preliminary statistics as such variations are expected with the final figures after removing duplicates and effecting transfers.
She urged all stakeholders to exercise caution when using the figures and always check with the Commission.
The sixth phase covered Mangochi District, Mangochi Town, Zomba District, Zomba City and Nsanje District.
In total, MEC has registered a total of 5,522,962 in the six phases against a projection of 6,835,358 which translates into 81 percent.
MEC started voter registration on June 26, 2018 and will run up to November 9, 2018.
The exercise is being conducted in eight phases which are having a break for transition.
Meanwhile, the seventh phase commences on Monday, October 8,2018 and will run up to October 21, 2018 covering Chitipa, Karonga, Rumphi, Machinga and Chiradzulu.
