Just days after the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development issued a Circular letter to all District Commissioners that government has adjusted upward ward allowances for councilors from K80,000 to K100,000 reflecting a 25% increase, councilors have said this has gone contrary to their petition.
Dowa Msakambewa East ward councilor, Martin Luka Phiri expressed disappointment saying their petition requested a 50% increment.
Luka said the 25% increment is not enough calling for its revision in the next budget.
The letter dated 4th December, 2018 said the approval for the upward adjustment has been made on the consideration that each council will contribute 20% from its locally generated revenues and the balance be covered from the General Resource Fund( GRF).
The letter also warned DCs that it is not permissible to pay ward councilors from any other source of funds.
Last week, government also adjusted upward honorarium given to Paramount Chiefs, Senior Chiefs, Sub Chiefs, Group Village heads and Village heads which has been doubled.
