Civil Society Oragnizations (CSO’s) under the banner of Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has asked government to consider declaring 21 May as public holiday for the sake of all Malawians.
This will allow citizens to exercise their right to vote and described the day as historic.
Speaking at news conference in Lilongwe on Tuesday HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo said right to vote should not be undermined.
“Malawians should be given more time to vote freely and trasact their business without being disturbed ,” he said.
According to Mtambo 21 May its historic day because its important day for the nation. “Other people fail to exercise their right to vote because their workplace do allow them to be absent, ” said Mtambo. Malawi has about 14 public holidays per year but 21 May which comes once in five years regarded as normal day.
