Drivers Association of Malawi forms chapter in Nkhata Bay

By Aliko Munde

Drivers Association of Malawi has formed a chapter in Nkhata Bay District as a step towards having structures in all the districts across the country so that the association’s voice is amplified.

Drivers Association of Malawi chairperson, Harrystone John Banda, said drivers face a lot of challenges, but lack a voice.

“There is a saying that in unity there is power, we are here forming Drivers Association- Nkhata Bay District Chapter with an aim of having structures in all the districts across the country.

“Many drivers rot in jail not because they committed a crime, no! But because of carelessness by other road users,” Banda said.

Banda also said a number of drivers working in government remain at grade N without promotion.

He, however, advised drivers in the country to observe rules and respect other road users.

“It is not that all drivers are good, there are other drivers who are rude on the road, that is bad and we will not support such drivers,” Banda said.

During the formation of the association’s Nkhata Bay chapter, Ganizani Makungu was elected as Chairperson deputized by James Nyirenda.

Sau Chirwa and Thomas Disi were elected secretary and vice respectively and Victor Ng’ambi was elected treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Makungu said one important activity the chapter will do is to conduct sensitization campaign to road users of the newly constructed M5 Mzuzu Nkhata Bay road.

‘We have experienced a lot of road accidents on our road as drivers over-speed and disregard the road signs,” Makungu said.
