Government has disclosed that it has closed the recruitment of interns in the 2018/2019 financial year.
Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila disclosed this Wednesday during a Press Conference which was held at Capital Hill in Lilongwe.
He said that the recruitment of interns has been closed in order to give interns who have been recently recruited enough time for job learning.
“Government has closed the recruitment of interns in this fiscal year in order to allow the newly recruited interns to have enough time for job learning,” the Minister explained.
Kasaila added that the closure of recruiting interns in this financial year would give his Ministry a room for better management and monitoring of the whole internship programme.
According to the Minister, 3,323 interns have been recruited under the Government Graduate Internship Programme in both the first and second phase of the recruitment; he also said that 1622 interns have been recruited in the second phase of the program.
He bemoaned that despite recruiting 2227 interns in the first round of the programme only 1,701 interns reported for work.
Kasaila urged the interns who have just been selected in the second phase to report for duties as early as they have been called for the internship.
“I am appealing to all youth not to miss their internship opportunity by reporting to work as soon as we have released the names of the successful graduates to attend the second phase of the internship program,” he said.
Kasaila urged youth to apply for internship under J4Y Project in their large numbers as the vacancy would be out soon.
He added that the selection would be carried out in December 2018 and successful youth would start their work on January 2, 2019.
Government has set two internship programmes namely: ‘Government Graduate Internship Program’ which was targeted to recruit 5,000 interns in 2018/2019 financial year and ‘Jobs for Youth (J4Y) Project Internship Programme’ which targeted to recruit 2, 000 interns as the project will be closed in the year 2020.
Government Graduate Internship Programme targets graduates with degrees in any discipline of study, while J4Y Project targets graduates with certificates, diplomas and degrees in the sectors of Agriculture, Information Communications Technology (ICT), Manufacturing and Small Scale Mining.
