Government promises to promote cotton farming

Minister of Agriculture,irrigation and water development Kondwani Nankhumwa promise the cotton farmers that government will promote cotton farming and transform agriculture to another level to fulfill people’s will.

Speaking during the launch of the Malawi cotton development strategy (MCDS) and Ministry of Agriculture irrigation and water development strategic plan on friday in Lilongwe Nankhumwa says planning is a key for someone to achieve, we cannot work anyhow that’s why we have come with strategic plan.

”Cotton is one of the special crops if we taking a good care of it going to contribute the economic status of the country through exporting it and opening some textile firm in this country.

”we cannot miximise cotton without a strategic plan we need to come up with a strategy and financing it.

”We implement what is in a document but not government alone but other stakeholders like non government organization, development partners and the donors and to make things work government has donated 50 motorcycles for the extension services, ” says Nankhumwa.

In his remarks Excutive director of cotton council of Malawi (CCM) Cosmas Luwanda says the documents has highlighting with pillars like cotton productivity, cotton farmers cooperatives, research and monitoring and evolution.

”we will introduce insurance for cotton farmers due due to climate and weather if a farmer face a dry spell the insurance companies will be able to compansate and we will going to engage the banks for the cotton development fund, ” says Luwanda.

African institute for cooperation citizenship (AICC) Felix liwonde says cotton is the number four forex eaner and the decline of the cotton production for the past four years resulting the loss of money and jobs by the government as well as the public due to retrenchment and the closure of the textile companies in this country.

”But with the coming of cotton council of Malawi (CCM) will boost the industry to produce and
export much cotton other than the lint which we used to export, ” says liwonde.

The the release of the documents of the strategic plan were funded by the Norwegian government.
