The main opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has appointed Lilongwe Central Lawmaker and MCP Chief Whip, Robin Lowe, as the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament.
Mr. Lowe is replacing Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who resigned from the post following his bid to contest in the presidential race on May 21st this year.
“The party was obliged to replace Dr. Lazarus Chakwera who resigned as Member of Parliament and Leader of opposition in adherence to the dictates of the law of the land,” reads a statement released by the party signed by its Publicity Secretary, rev. Maurice Munthali.
“The party settled for Lowe among the many senior, able and deserving Members of Parliament having been guided by and in compliance with the Parliamentary laws as well as Standing Orders.”
In the statement, the party has indicated it has also appointed Messrs Jacob Hara and Clement Mlombwa as the Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip in Parliament respectively.
It further announces that the party will launch its manifesto on Friday, 8th March, 2019 at the Bingu wa Mutharika International Convention Centre.
