Malawi Police Orders HRDC to Stop organising Demos

The Malawi Police Service has demanded that the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) stop convening demonstrations until the coalition is able to do so peacefully.
In statement signed by Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, Rodney Jose in our possession has ordered the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) to stop convening demonstrations in the country.
In a letter to HRDC chairperson Timothy Mtambo, Jose says the decision follows violent and criminal acts that have characterised recent protests.
HRDC has been convening protests aimed at forcing the resignation of chairperson for Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Jane Ansah.
The rights Coalition is yet to respond to the letter.
