Mayaya queries police negligence to prosecute MEC Warehouse Manager

By Brian Kanyenda

Some people calling themselves concerned citizens have questioned Malawi Police Services’ stance on its negligence to arrest political related culprits on the matters of public importance.
The grouping led by Billy Mayaya have cited the delay to arrest some suspects in the killing of Buleya Lule per demand from the Malawi Human Rights Commission.

In the letter Mayaya has tasked the police for failing to prosecute MEC Warehouse Manager Mr. Deverson Makwete who lied under oath that polling materials were with the Clerk of Parliament yet the materials were in his possession.
“The court on 25th July ordered the prosecution of Makwete, in respect of the sworn statements he submitted to the court in Constitutional Case No 1 of 2019 in which Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera are contesting the results of the 21st May, 2019 Presidential Election,” says part of the statement

Mayaya adds: “The Court then ordered the police to investigate Mr. Deverson Makwete to determine whether his conduct amounted to perjury in view of his submission of two contradictory sworn statements in response to the application for disclosure of specific documents by Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera.”
The court ordered MEC to disclose specific documents on application of Dr. Lazarus Chakwera’s lawyers.

The documents included Record Log Books, Counterfoils for all ballot papers used, unused, spoilt and cancelled and Register of voters ticked or marked to have voted for all the 5002 Polling Stations.
Mayaya has therefore demanded the immediate arrest of Makwete and other culprits mentioned in the assassination of Lule who killed while in police custody.
