The Office of the University Registrar, Mzuzu University, has confirmed that the 20th Graduation Ceremony will be held in Mzuzu on Friday 19th July, 2019.
Announcing the confirmation in a letter dated 15th July, 2019 signed by James Kwilimbe, Acting University Registrar and Secretary to Council, His Excellency the State President of the Republic of Malawi, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika and Chancellor of Mzuzu University will not be in attendance.
The office says it has pleased President Mutharika to delegate the Vice_ Chancellor Professor John Kalenga Saka to preside over the Graduation ceremony in Mzuzu.
Meanwhile, social media reports in circulation are alleging that Mutharika’s failure to attend the ceremony is due to security reasons.
The reports says the President is afraid to see the very same situation he saw in Lilongwe where he and his motorcade were forced to use the By- pass road to Bingu stadium off to City centre and State House as angry demonstrators were busy burning tyres on the M1 Lilongwe – Blantyre road.
The reports further says the President was awaken with several intruptions by the MCP parliamentarians in Parliament disturbing his State of the Nation address hoping the same will carry the day in the Graduation ceremony.
The HRDC announced during a press conference in Lilongwe on Monday that the Tuesday’s nationwide wide demos have been switched to Friday, 19th July, 2019.
The Tuesday demonstrations have been cancelled as everyone in the committee was busy putting pressure in solidarity at the authorities to release fellow two human rights activists Gift Trapence and Rev.Mc Donald Sembereka from jail.
HRDC’s national chairperson, Timothy Mtambo assured Malawians that the Friday demonstrations will take place as planned.
The visit to Mzuzu by Mutharika would have been the first public appearance in the North after the disputed May,21 tripartite elections.
Mec Chairperson, Justice Dr. Jane Ansah sc declared the fraudulent elections free, fair, transparent and credible with Mutharika as a winner and this led Malawians under the HRDC to go on to the streets protesting calling for her resignation.
However, it remains unclear whether the Graduation will take place as Mzuzu is all set for another BABYLON MUST FALL demonstrations, Friday 19th July, 2019.
