Professional cyclists from across the country have appealed to government and the private sector to consider sponsoring them, observing that the sport is being neglected.

Speaking after defending his championship title at the Tour De Dwangwa, one of the country’s celebrated cyclist, Steven Nazombe, lamented the way cyclists are being treated in the country alleging that their professional body is letting them down.

Nazombe said Malawian cyclists have been participating in international competitions without government support observing that when one of them wins, it’s the country that will rejoice.

Nazombe, who has defended the title for the 5th time on the local scene and came second on the international, said it is important for government to consider sponsoring other sporting activities besides football, saying not all Malawians love football.

He said Malawi as a country has tried football for all the years but failed to earn a recognition on the world map saying with cycling, Malawi can do better if all the resources are invested in the sport.

He went away with K90,000 prize money after coming 1st in the men’s category cycling a stretch of 85 km from Kande in Nkhatabay to Chitowe in Dwangwa, Nkhotakota in 2 hrs 25 min.

A- Zomba based professional female cyclist, Mervis Mapepa, won in the women category after cycling the same distance in 3 hrs and she pocketed K90,000 prize money and Interestingly, Mervis Mapepa’s husband, trailed 3rd to Nazombe in the men’s category.
