The Senior Resident Magistrate in Nkhata Bay has jailed eight years a 30 year old woman who scalded fellow woman with hot water over a man. The court heard through state prosecutor Sub Inspector Chikondi Lipato that the victim, Milika Mkandawire got a rumour that her husband was in a love affair with the suspect who has been identified as Angela Phiri. On August 6, 2021, the victim was surprised seeing her husband out door about 22:00 hours. She decided to follow him at the accused’s house within Chiwaza area at Chintheche trading centre.
Mkandawire caught her husband in the side-chick’s house. Quarrel eventually broke between the two women until the side lover poured hot water onto the man’s wife. The wife reported the matter to Chintheche Police Post where officers investigated the matter and arrested the accused. She was charged with acts intended to cause grievous harm. Appearing before court, the accused admitted to the charge, prompting the state to rush into submission in which prosecutor Lipato asked the court to stiffen the punishment saying that the act displayed by the convict was tantamount to killing.
In mitigation, the convict prayed for leniency arguing that she committed the offence for self defense against her fellow woman who possessed a knife by the time she entered into her house. Magistrate Issah Maulid quashed the mitigation and sentenced the convict to eight years imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the day she was arrested.
Phiri hails from Ngalauka Village, Traditional Authority Malanda in Nkhata Bay District.
