In a bid to promote child rights in the country,A project for children on and off the streets called Tikondane has so far send back home thousands of street children from streets of Lilongwe for the past years.
The Project started in 1998 by the Missionary Sisters of our lady of Africa under the Archdiocese of Lilongwe with the goal of re -integrated of street children with their families and community.
Project Coordinator for Tikondane ,Sister Anna Masawe said they conduct frequent street visit in order to talk to them about the dangers of living in the streets.
” We also go to police station to see if children are detained and make sure that they are brought to justice and are not violated in any other way,”She said.
She further said once the children are taken from the streets or police custody ,they have a transit shelter where they are assigned to a social worker to understand the child’s behaviour and asked him or her about his or her family whereabouts.
”If the roots of the children family is unknown ,we put them on Boarding school program or explore them to other non governmental organizations that keeps children longer than us because our place is like a transit shelter,” Masawe said.
Chinsapo and Mtsiliza are some of the areas in Lilongwe where most of street children come from .
