Flames substitute Chawanangwa Kaonga blazed his spot-kick over the bar before Precious Sambani shot hit the post in the shootout, sparking scenes of joy among Chipolopolo fans at the Princess Magogo Stadium as they progress to the semi finals of the COSAFA Cup.
“It was a tough encounter, Malawi played well and they have a Good team. They were 2-0 up but we fought hard to get the result” Said Zambia coach Aggrey Chiyangi.
It was a remarkable comeback from the Zambia boys, who had seen Gabadinho Mhango and Gerald Phiri Jnr give Malawi a 2-0 lead midway through first half.Meke Mwase’ side appeared poised to progress to the semis after a long time, but, Austin Muwowo’s 25 metres low shot gave Zambia hope and Emmanuel Chabula equalised with just few seconds to go to take a gripping Quoter Finals.
The referee added 3 minutes but was too late for Malawi to get another goal until end of the match.
During penalties Malawi scored through Gerald Phiri Jnr who was voted Man of the match for the second time in a row and Stainly Sanudi while Chawanangwa Kaonga and Precious Sambani missed their spot-kicks.
As for Zambia they scored through Bruce Musakanya, Adrian Chama, Mwila Phiri and Emmanuel Chabula.
Flames coach Meke Mwase did not hide his disappointment as he pointed lack of maturity on his boys” I am very disappointed with the result, I think we lack maturity””Despite our Defeat today am happy with the overall performance of my boys” He said.
Following the Defeat Malawi has been relegated to the second tier of COSAFA where they will face Comoros in the second Plate Semi Finals on Tuesday.
