Police in Mponela, Dowa have arrested two Malawians and ten Ethiopians over trafficking in persons and illegal entry respectively.
The Malawians include a driver who has been identified as Alufeyo Mkwanda, 36, of Eneya Village T/A Kwataine in Ntcheu and Mathews Msopole, 27, of Mwahimba Village T/A Kyungu in Karonga.
They were all arrested on Sunday, 23 May 2021, at an adhoc police roadblock which was mounted along the M1 Road at Mthandi Village near Mponela Trading Centre.
In the course of duty at around 1:00 pm, a 15 tonner van bearing registration number MJ 9506 Volvo belonging to HALS (PVT) CO LTD came from Kasungu heading towards Lilongwe.
The syndicate was discovered, after police went through a wedge built from bags of rice, unshelled groundnuts and fish, and found the illegal immigrants hiding in between. Instantly, the two Malawians and all the ten Ethiopians were all arrested.
They will appear before court where the Malawians will face charges of trafficking in person, contravening section 14 (1) of human trafficking Act, while the rest will answer to illegal entry.
The Mponela First Grade Magistrate’s court recently convicted and sentenced a 33-year-old Charles Banda Chirwa to 12 months imprisonment with hard labour for trafficking 29 Ethiopians.
Police would like to reassure community members that anybody involved in any criminal act will be arrested and prosecuted.
