Police in Mponela – Dowa on 21 May 2021 arrested four men over drug related offences during an Operation Afya currently taking place in Southern African Countries.
The suspects: Bornventure Banda, 22, who hails from Madisi village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa was arrested for operating a private clinic and being found in possession of medical drugs without licences.
Madalitso Victor, 46, of Pondapo Village and Jackson Kapachika, 19, of Chimpeni Village both from Traditional Authority Mponela have been arrested for being found in possession of Indian Hemp without licence.
The last, John Lungu, 29, hails from Chimwaza Village under the same traditional authority has been nabbed for being found in possession of counterfeit drugs.
Pharmacy and Medicines Regulatory Authority will be engaged to assess risk and value of the confiscated drugs which include: antibiotics like amoxilin, penicillin, gentamycin, etc.
Operation Afya is a regional operation to disrupt the activities of transnational organized criminals involved in the trafficking of counterfeit goods and medical products in Southern Africa. The operation also aims to increase awareness, resources, educational efforts and capacity building on this issue.
Meanwhile, Mponela Police would like to encourage all patriotic citizens to continue tipping the police of any criminal act happening in their respective localities.
