The Anti-Corruption Bureau [ACB] has restricted National Oil Company of Malawi [NOCMA] Limited from dealing with procurement processes towards award of contract.
NOCMA awarded fuel transportation contracts to three companies: Lake Oil, Dalbit and Camel Oil where the ACB describes the contracts as controversial surrounding the fuel supply contract.
In a statement dated 9th June 2021 signed by ACBs Principal Public Relations Officer, Egrita Ndala, says in pursuant to its powers under section 23 of the Corrupt Practices Act, on 8th June 2021, the ACB issued a restriction notice to NOCMA on a contract supply fuel under procurement number of NOCMA.
The ACB says the restriction notice follows several complaints received alleging irregularities and suspected corruption surrounding the fuel procurement processes saying it has instituted investigations into the matter.
For the past week, social media has been awash with reports that the country will run dry in the coming weeks with no fuel supply saying this is so because NOCMA has no leadership to provide sensible direction on the fuel supply in the country.
“…Following the restriction notice, NOCMA is therefore restricted from awarding the contract until the ACB has concluded the investigation or lifted the restriction notice…,’’ reads the statement in part.
The reports forced the Centre for Democracy and Development Initiatives [CDEDI] to ask President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera to take action as soon as yesterday observing that NOCMA has no Chief Executive Officer, Director of Finance and Director of Procurement.
Its Executive Director, Sylvester Namiwa, warned Government that if Malawians are sailing through in no fuel supply, it will mobilize Malawians to demonstrate saying this time unlike the past, the demonstrators will not go back to their homes until the situation has improved.
Meanwhile, a Malawi Congress Party [MCP] diehard from Mvera in Dowa district Mr. Rodgers Kamphangala, has advised the Director General of the ACB, Ms. Martha Chizuma to exercise her duties in the interest of Malawians and not politicians who have destroyed the country in the name of democracy.
Kamphangala advised Martha Chizuma to relook all corruption files regardless of party affiliations assuring her that she is at the ACB employed by Malawians not politicians as politicians are the ones in the middle of corruption hence no need to shield politicians if she has come to the ACB to serve the people of Malawi,
He asked Martha Chizuma to work hand in hand with a constituency of Malawians that are feeling sorry for their country to be always poor while the country has all the resources to make it rich asking her that if she is meeting interference from politicians, she should report to President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera with a copy to Malawians that employed him to be in that position.
“…We, Malawians have employed Martha Chizuma to fulfill campaign promises made by the Tonse Alliance Government to end corruption in Malawi, Malawians have full trust in you to end corruption which has blanketed the whole country starting from the President, Vice President, Ministers, MPs down to the bottom part, the rural community…,’’ he said.
