Lawyers representing Prophet Shephered and Prophetess Mary Bushiri will be in court today to tussle for bail and extradition process for their clients as they start their defense on how they managed to abscond bail in South Africa and escape to Malawi.
Prophet Bushiri and his wife, Mary, handed themselves to Malawi Police in Lilongwe following a Warrant of Arrest issued by Interpol in Pretoria, South Africa, that they are on the wanted list for offences committed in South Africa.
Their lawyers pressed hard to secure bail for their clients on Wednesday but failed before Justice Ruth Chinangwa. Meanwhile outside, many Enlightened Christian Gathering [ECG] Church members were waiting to see if the bail would be granted, but all left the place in a solemn mood.
As this was not enough the church members joined by well–wishers were seen mobilizing themselves for a vigil which was staged at the entrance of Lilongwe Police Station in show of solidarity with their leader in all times of trouble, sorrow and happiness. The couple, however, spent a night at Lumbadzi Police Station.
According to South African Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Aaron Matsoaledi, Prophet Shephered and Prophetess Mary Bushiri have five different passports bearing different details obtained in Malawi, but this was trashed by Immigration Department in Malawi saying he is a holder of a Diplomatic passport.
Section 77 of the Malawi Constitution reads….. “No Malawian citizen will be extradicted from Malawi if he or she holds a Diplomatic passport unless the individual is answering treason or murder charges.’’
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa speaking to the media on Wednesday said the Bushiri matter is a concern to all South Africans and the world following, saying he is waiting for a detailed report on how Bushiri managed to escape from South Africa to his native country, Malawi, assuring his countrymen and women that unspecified action will be taken.
But, in his message to the international community before handing himself to the police in Malawi, Prophet Bushiri said he is innocent until proven guilty by the court of law, claiming that there is no court in the world that has proven him guilty.
….” I and my wife came to Malawi not to seek political intervention, but to seek justice before the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, having a strong belief that the Constitution protects its citizen including me and my wife,’’…. reads part of his writing.
Meanwhile, it has been established that the South African Government is processing another Warrant of Arrest to Prophet Shephered and Prophetess Mary Bushiri, who are already in the hands of police in Malawi for other charges.
