Chakwera Postpones Cabinet Reshuffle

President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera says the Cabinet assessment reports from the Vice President, Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima have been submitted to his office for final review.

Dr. Chakwera said given that the reports are as substantial and the President review is thorough, the completion of the task will take a few more days than anticipated saying the President is now fully appraised of the matter and will release his Cabinet the instant he completes this sacred duty in a manner that conforms with the Constitution and ensures the best delivery of service to Malawians.

In a statement on Cabinet review update dated 31st March 2021 signed by Presidential Press Secretary, Brian Banda, the President is thanking all Malawians for exercising patience in this process and trusting him to decide what Cabinet is right for Malawi to be going forward and inform the nation about the same without delay once the decision is made.

On Monday, this week, State House released a statement that Cabinet would be out by Friday 1st April 2021, and this was after President Dr. Chakwera failed to honour his promise made after many Malawians questioned the criteria used to select the first Cabinet which comprised of brothers, sisters, families, in-laws and above all, relatives of relatives in July, 2020.

President Dr. Chakwera assured Malawians that the Cabinet will be assessed in 5 months and by the end of that period which, was December 2020, a new Cabinet was supposed to be released, which is yet to happen till this day.

This is not the first time for President Dr. Chakwera to change his tune, as he assured Malawians that a comprehensive report on the 6.2 Billion Kwacha Covid-19 funds which disappeared in the eyes of the Tonse Alliance Government would be made in a month’s time but to this day, the report probably has gone to its final review and nobody knows when this will be made public.

While Malawians were thinking of the 6.2 Billion Kwacha which disappeared, the Malawi nation was also shocked with social media reports that 11.2 Billion Kwacha out of the 17 Billion Kwacha requested by DoDMA for councils to pay back to its account at FDH Bank City Centre, Lilongwe, is again nowhere to be traced.

Malawians to this day have been left in suspense as to whether Government will produce another comprehensive report on the second 11.2 Billion Kwacha or it will only release the first one for 6.2 Billion a development which has made people alleging that the big chunk of the monies is in the pockets of senior Government officials not just allowances as given out in meetings.

One social media commentator, Onjezani Kenani , says he has read the press statement from State House on Cabinet review update three times and he has failed to understand the message it is trying to convey, saying it sounds as if the President is saying the delay to reshuffle Cabinet is not his fault , it’s the Vice President, Dr. Saulosi Klaus Chilima who gave him this assessment too late.

…”Today, 31st March, 2021, State House has released an incoherent statement that is explaining the lure to reshuffle the Cabinet…,’’ reads Kenani’s writing on the wall.
