Police in Mponela – Dowa have arrested Village Headman Nyanda and a community policing forum (CPF) member for allegedly murdering a suspect. The village chief whose real name is Kanthiti Tchale, 57 and Stanley Davide, 41, a community policing member, both hail from Chinkhwiri Village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa were arrested on 03 May 2021.
It is alleged that on 10 April 2021 Gredson Chambonga, 33, from Chinkhwiri Village, T/A Chakhaza in Dowa, was drunk when he started harassing his in-law while demanding for food. Well-wishers tipped the village headman and the community policing member to handle the situation.
Upon their arrival, the village chief ordered the community policing member to tie up Gredson and lock him in a room for the entire night. The CPF member did as ordered using a tightly tied rubber rope.
The following morning, Chimbonga was freed but there were wounds around his elbow and the wrist joints. On 12 April, he reported the matter to Mponela Police Station where he was referred to Mponela Rural Hospital. Due to his worsening condition, he was further referred to Dowa District Hospital where he was admitted and succumbed to the wounds on 02 May 2021.
Postmortem examination has revealed that death occurred due to Bacteremia secondary to multiple wounds.
The accused will appear before court to answer murder charges once investigations are over.
Meanwhile, Mponela Police Station would like to condemn the application of corporal punishment to people suspected of committing crime instead of informing the police immediately for proper action.
