Two Human Rights Defenders Coalition – HRDC senior members have been arrested by the Malawi Police Service in Lilongwe.
According to HRDC member Luke Tembo, the two are vice chairperson Gift Trapence and Rev. Macdonald Sembereka.
Reports say the duo is being ferried to Blantyre. Their charges are not yet known. Some reports suggested that HRDC leader Timothy Mtambo is also on the wanted list.
The arrests come just hours after President Peter Mutharika warned HRDC leaders that they will face the wrath of the law for organising violent demonstrations and wanting to shut down state residencies on March 25th, among others.
DPP Regional Governor and Deputy Transport Minister Charles Mchaha told a rally at Njamba Freedom Park that if Mtambo will go ahead with their plan he must bid farewell to his family.
“Ngati a (Timothy) Mtambo apitilire kukatseka nyumba za boma, akasanzikiretu kwawo,” warned Mchacha in a Chichewa speech.
